Several of us have had a casual conversation tonight agreeing that India is part of what we expected and something quite different. We also agree that we probably won't be able to describe it well, but we did see a lot of cows on what we would consider the Interstate. This dancer is a young college girl trained by her Guru (master) who is also her Grandmother. Jobs in science, technology, culture and math are the goal for education from the viewpoint of parents and most students. Indian classical culture in arts, music and drama are being lost. The cultural resource center we visited today is fully government funded to train teachers to share culture. This entity includes math, science and technology as culture as well. Teaching is a low respect career and they do not have enough teachers by a long shot. They fill the positions with teaching aids who can be relatives of government leaders and only need to be paid about 5000 rupees per year. What a day! We got out and saw, engaged and had very heady conversations as colleagues. I am also very fortunate to be with this Baker's dozen which include three attorneys who choose classroom teaching and two PhD's and a couple other PhD candidates in the works.
